Scenario Analysis Officers are faced with moral decisions everyday on and off duty. It is ultimately, up to the person who is faced to make the choice between right and wrong. â€Å"Even if a man is answerable only to his conscience, he will answer more responsibly if he is compelled to articulate principles on which he acts.† stated by Lon L. Fuller (1975). We were given a few scenarios to apply this saying to and the following are my opinions that I have regarding them. The Drugs at a Friend’s House scenario is a constant issue to most officers. Many officers want to go out with the same people or friends that they have had prior to the force. However, a lot has changed in the officer. Some will turn a blind eye and the others†¦show more content†¦Most police departments have specific guidelines on accepting gifts, regardless of who they are from or what they are. Most will always allow you to accept the basket but not the money card. This is because it is known, that by accepting gifts could lead to the slippery slope of corruption. This is showing moral conflict and possibly an integrity issue. I would accept the fruit basket but would explain to the store owner my appreciation of the thought, but would have to decline the gift card. The explanation would be somewhere along the lines of, I thank you for your offer but unfortunately I will not be able to accept the gift card because of the policies that the police department hold on money gifts. The final scenario is about discrimination against homosexuals. I believe that Officer Davis does not have moral problem but is showing his ignorance. What Officer Jones does on his off time is his business. Most police departments’ today state that there will be NO tolerance for discrimination of race, color, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, or disability in the conduct of law-enforcement activities. However, if Officer Jones is sexually harassing Officer Davis, then that would be a different story. The Stoic Tradition In the approximate year of 320 B.C., one could be walking down the street with a high probability of passing a house where several men would be gathered out on the porch. It is likely that this was a gathering of individuals discussing philosophy. The gatherings became a more common occurrence, and since they would take place out on the porches, the school of philosophy derived from them takes its name from the Greek stoa, or porch. The ideology of that movement is henceforth known as Stoicism. Also, the Stoics have come to use the statement made by Socrates as the cornerstone of their judgments, being that no harm can come to a good man. However, this concept is taken a bit further by the Stoics, as they†¦show more content†¦This is also the place where Socrates and Plato are heard in the endeavor towards human excellence by means of focusing on the actions of the self as opposed to the actions of others, which cannot be controlled. Marcus Aurelius wrote that one is to let no action be done at random, or in any other way than in accordance with the principle which perfects the art, (Aurelius 518). This statement reinforces the notion of following a trajectory. By performing actions with the intention of becoming a better human being, one is following the personal trajectory towards human excellence. This intention in every action undertaken does not make it random, and keeping on course towards self-improvement causes the action in particular to be one which perfects the art. The action becomes an action of being in accordance with the principles of nature, and thus reinforces the venture towards human excellence perpetually. Sea And Poison It has been said that while times change, people do not. From my past experiences, and from things that I have learned throughout the years, I have to agree with the previous statement. I feel that the morality of a person almost always rules when it comes to making serious and important decisions. Different time periods can alter ones thinking in certain situations to an extent. For example, in The Sea and Poison, Nobu Ueda had moved to Manchuria with her new husband. While she was living there, she noticed that her neighbors occasionally hit their maids. While Nobu would not usually hit her maid, soon enough she started to do so. Her morality was influenced in a way by the norms and stigmas of her surroundings and time. However, different people react differently in different situations. Everyone had free will and the freedom to make their own conscience decisions. When Suguro and Toda were asked if they wanted to take part in the vivisection's, both had agreed at first. After taking time to think about what they were actually going to take part in, they started to feel awkward. Suguro for instance was definitely having second thoughts about his decision then later regrets his decision. On his walk to the hospital the day the vivisections were to take place, he contemplated on going back to his boarding room. This is his conscience reminding him of his moral standards. All day before the vivisections, there was nothing for Suguro to do. Suguro and Toda seemed to avoid each other and did not let a word pass between them. When it came time for the "experiment" on the prisoner, Suguro was not able to follow through on his duties involved in the vivisection. Suguro's morality triumphed besides the fact that "everyone else was doing it." Toda however was able to take part in the vivisection but was somewhat uneasy about the whole experience. The fact that he helped take someone else's life did not seem to phase him that much. Throughout the book Toda seemed to be more apathetic to such things than Suguro. Toda has no moral strength. That is just the type of person he is. The Old Man felt the vivisection would make a contribution to science. However, after the vivisection takes place, we see the Old Man peering into the operating theater looking troubled. The Old Man feels he was trained to save lives, not take them. In the end all are troubled and destroyed by the vivisection, especially Suguro, but no one reveals their feelings. In conclusion, the decision in general all depends on the particular person. I personally feel that in the case of the vivisection if the right person were asked, they would have declined. Suguro was not able to participate in the vivisection because of his own personal feelings, however, others were able to. If I was asked to participate in the vivisection I would definitely decline the offer, however I am sure there would be others that are distorted enough to do so.
